Test your skills of deduction with the September 2023 edition of Riddle Me This: Truth or Lie?
Hugh was born in and lives in Chicago. He loves his city and is a true-blue Chicagoan.
The other day he told a visitor to his beloved city, with a serious tone, to be careful when talking to other people in the city because “all Chicagoans are liars.”
With Hugh, we can never be sure if he is lying or not. Can you determine if Hugh told the truth or lied in this case?

This riddle answer is flawed. Hugh is a liar, for he said, “all Chicagoans are liars”, therefore he could be lying and others truthful and this still be a lie. The use of the word “all” makes this an oversimplification, a common fallacy. In the strictest sense, the fallacy statement is a lie.
Not sure I agree with the answer. Although I do believe that Hugh is a liar…
Let’s assume that Hugh told the truth. Then, his statement that “All Chicagoans are liars” is true. However, from this, we must deduce that Hugh, being a Chicagoan himself, is also a liar based on his statement. This is a contradiction, so we must discard our assumption. (directly from the answer, no issue)
Let’s assume the opposite, that Hugh is actually a liar. This means that his statement that he is born and raised is Chicago is a lie (lie #1). Also, if he is a liar, the statement he just made that “All Chicagoans are liars” is also a lie (lie #2). However, since he is not from Chicago (lie #1) this makes lie #2 (all Chicagoans are liars) immaterial. Hugh is a liar, on all fronts.
It is not indeterminate. Hugh cannot be telling the truth for the reasons stated in the answer, but just because his statement is not true does not mean that the opposite must therefore be true. The riddle is resolved if some Chicagoans (including Hugh) are liars and some are not.
One can conclude that the Chicagoan Liars he is referring to would be and is the proper label for Chicago politicians.
Without the use of inductive and deductive reasoning it is a no-brainer……..liars. lol.
Are liars always lying when the speak? Hugh may be lying about being a Chicagoan. He may be lying about all Chicagoans being liars. He may or may not be a Chicagoan. At least Hugh is a liar, if all Chicagoans are liars all the time, and he is one of them, or if he isn’t a Chicagoan and lied about that.
If everything liars say is a lie, then he’s not a Chicagoan AND all Chicagoans aren’t liars. I don’t see how he could be both a Chicagoan and not a liar if everything he said was true. He may or may not be a lying about BOTH points. He could be lying about the first and second point or about neither point if he is an ocassional liar.
Based on the answer provided by the commentator of the riddle, the commentator is Hugh, and Hugh is a liar.
