Professional Development Hours (PDH) Requirements

Continuing education is known as Professional Development Hours (PDH) in Texas

Here is a summary of the PE continuing education requirements mandated by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers.

Texas is transitioning from a one- to two-year renewal cycle and changing renewal dates to either January 31 or July 31. During the transitional period, some engineers will have non-standard renewal terms.

  • In short, all renewals in the year of 2026 are required to earn 15 PDH.
  • Those who renew in March and September of 2026 will renew for more than 12 months at the 12-month rate and will need only 15 PDH on the 2027 / 2028 renewal. Subsequent renewals will require 30 PDH.
  • Those who renew in June or December 2026 will renew for more than 24 months at the 2-year rate and will need 30 PDH on the 2028 / 2029 renewal. Subsequent renewals will require 30 PDH.

Renewal Dates

For 2026, renewal dates remain at March 31, June 30, September 30, or December 31 based on the initial date of licensure of the Texas PE.

Beginning in 2027, renewals will be either January 31 or July 31.

Newly licensed PEs should refer to their license for correct renewal dates.

Board Approval

The Texas Board of Professional Engineers does not pre-approve providers or specific courses. Each engineer must determine whether an activity meets the TBPE requirements.

Approved Content

The course must have a “clear purpose and objective which will maintain, improve, or expand the skills and knowledge relevant to the licensee’s field of practice.”

For renewals classified as one year from the chart above, at least 1 PDH must be earned in professional ethics, roles and responsibilities of professional engineering, or review of the Texas Engineering Practice Act and Board Rules.

Renewals classified as two years require at least 2 PDH in ethics.

A maximum of 5 PDH can be earned through self-directed study. Examples of self-directed study given by the Board include reading up on a new topic, researching a new design, or keeping up with current engineering periodicals.

Approved Activities

Online courses are accepted. For Professional Engineers, there is no limit on the number of PDHs that can be earned through online continuing education.

PDH Carryover

A maximum of 14 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

    All subsequent renewals will be every two years and fees for two years will be due.
