Continuing Professional Competency (CPC) Requirements
Continuing Education or PDH is known as CPC in North Carolina

Professional Development Options, parent company of NoonPi, is approved by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors as a provider of continuing education for professional engineers (Sponsor #S-0101). Here is a summary of the engineering continuing education requirements mandated by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Hours Required

15 hours annually

Renewal Dates

December 31 every year for all engineers

Board Approval

The Board does not pre-approve specific courses, but does pre-approve course sponsors. Engineers are not required to earn hours from an approved sponsor. However, courses provided by an approved sponsor are assured to be accepted by the Board. The catalog on this website lists courses and webinars by Topic Areas. Due to Board restrictions on content, you should avoid earning your PDH in the Topic Areas listed above.

While the Board does not have specific acceptance rules, its website states that one or more of the following criteria should be used to make the determination of acceptable material:

  • The course or activity is taken through an “Approved Sponsor.” We are a North Carolina Board “Approved Sponsor,” #S-0101.
  • The licensee can substantiate that the course or activity has maintained, improved, or expanded the skills and knowledge relevant to his/her field of practice.
  • The activity will enhance the licensee’s ability to provide engineering/surveying services in a professional and competent manner and better protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public.
  • The subject matter of the course or activity is related to the licensee’s professional practice.
  • The course or activity is aimed at engineers/surveyors and is of a technical nature.
  • Advanced computer courses to be used in professional practice.1

Approved Activities

The Board has specifically approved the use of online courses to meet the CPC requirements.

PDH Carryover

A maximum of 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Notes

  1. While “advanced” computer courses designed for use in an engineer’s professional practice are accepted, basic computer courses are not. Examples of unacceptable courses would be basic computer skills or basic software skills that do not have specific engineering applications.
  2. For dual licensees, the number of PDH remains 30 biennially; however, a minimum of one-third of the required credits must pertain to each profession.
  3. PDH completion records must be maintained for a minimum of 3 years.
