Professional Development Hours (PDH) Requirements

Continuing Education for licensed Professional Engineers in Minnesota

Here is a summary of the engineering continuing education requirements mandated by the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience, and Interior Design.

Minnesota PDH for PEs

Hours Required

24 hours biennially

Renewal Dates

June 30 of even-numbered years for all engineers

Board Approval

The Board does not pre-approve providers or specific courses. Each engineer must determine whether an activity meets the Board’s requirements.

Approved Content

Technical, non-technical, regulatory, ethical, and business practice activities for a well-rounded education provided the education directly benefits the health, safety, or welfare of the public. There must be a clear purpose and objective for each activity which will maintain, improve, or expand skills and knowledge obtained prior to initial licensure or certification or develop new and relevant skills and knowledge. A change effective for the renewal period ending June 30, 2016 requires that 2 PDH each renewal cycle must be in the subject of engineering ethics. The ethics PDH must be earned within the renewal biennium and cannot be carried forward.

Approved Activities

Internet-based courses are specifically shown as acceptable by the Minnesota Board provided an exam or other verification process is used. PDHengineer’s online quiz satisfies this requirement.

PDH Carryover

A maximum of 12 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period. The required ethics PDH cannot be carried forward since 2 PDH in ethics must be earned during each renewal period. However, additional ethics credits can be carried forward as a part of the total number of hours to be earned, provided 2 PDH in ethics is also earned in the current renewal period.

Notes

  1. Dual license holders must earn professional development hours required by the license or certificate requiring the greatest number of professional development hours and must obtain in each profession a minimum of one-third of the total professional development hours required. The remaining one-third requirement may be obtained in either profession at the sole discretion of the licensee.
  2. PDH completion records must be maintained for a minimum of 2 years.
