Variable Speed PTAC and VTAC with Inverter Technology

This webinar provides a practical and technical overview of variable speed PTAC and VTAC systems utilizing inverter-driven compressor technology, with a focus on how these systems operate and why they are increasingly adopted in modern HVAC applications. Participants will gain an understanding of the evolving efficiency demands within the HVAC industry and how inverter technology addresses energy consumption, comfort, and equipment longevity challenges compared to traditional single- and dual-speed compressor designs.

We will explain the fundamentals of inverter-driven operation, including the conversion of single-phase AC power to DC power and back to variable-frequency three-phase AC using capacitors and insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). These concepts are tied directly to real-world performance benefits such as improved part-load efficiency, reduced electrical stress, and smoother compressor operation.

In addition, we will cover comfort and system protection considerations, including humidity control, dehumidification with reheat, and the importance of voltage monitoring and surge protection for inverter-driven equipment. The session concludes with a forward-looking discussion on industry trends, including AI and smart-home integration, sustainability initiatives, emerging refrigerants, and expected market growth in sectors such as hospitality and assisted living.

What you’ll learn in just one hour:

  • Explain how inverter-driven compressors operate and how AC-to-DC and DC-to-AC conversion enables variable-speed control
  • Compare single-speed, dual-speed, and inverter-driven compressors in terms of efficiency, performance, and equipment protection
  • Identify the impact of variable-speed operation on comfort, including humidity control, dehumidification with reheat, and indoor air quality
  • Recognize key industry trends influencing PTAC and VTAC system design, including smart integration, sustainability, diagnostics, and market growth
