In Revisioning Systems for Custom Designed Products, you'll learn ...

  • How to design Revisioning Systems based on the type of changes and the on processes experienced by the components developed by an Engineering Department
  • The application of the 3F concept (form, fit & function) and how it is used to classify the engineering changes experienced by Minor Revisions, Major Revisions and Part Number Changes
  • The principles used to define the Revision Truth Tables that classify the engineering changes
  • How to use the decision process for determining a Revision type for a component

Length: 38 pages

This course introduces the principles used to define Revisioning Systems used by Engineering Departments that create custom designed products.

The material describes the engineering changes experienced by components, introduces the concept of lifecycles and its relationship with the components' revisions and shows ways to associate the changes with the components' revisions. Based on this, the course then presents the best practices related to the use of truth tables to determine the appropriate revision types.

Additionally, the course familiarizes the student with the principles used to design the forms used in the revisioning processes (ECRs and ECOs/ECNs) and presents practical considerations for designing the databases or selecting the vaults that organize the engineering change activities.

By the use of practical examples, the course presents the differences between the revision of parts and the revision of assemblies. The material also illustrates the difficulties encountered when revising components that are in the design stage and when revising already manufactured components.

Moreover, the course discusses some of the challenges encountered when Engineering Departments are subject to company mergers and acquisitions and suggests approaches to handle those challenges.

This course is useful for engineers that already have solid knowledge of product design, may have had exposure with designing Part Numbering Systems and would like to acquire additional organizational skills related to the management of the Engineering Department.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • How to design Revisioning Systems based on the type of changes and the on processes experienced by the components developed by an Engineering Department
  • The application of the 3F concept (form, fit & function) and how it is used to classify the engineering changes experienced by Minor Revisions, Major Revisions and Part Number Changes
  • The principles used to define the Revision Truth Tables that classify the engineering changes
  • How to use the decision process for determining a Revision type for a component
  • The use of the Engineering Change processes (ECRs and ECOs/ECNs) and the design of the forms associated with those processes
  • The organization of databases and selection of vaults and their relationship to the Revisioning System
