Non-destructive testing (NDT) is defined as testing used to find irregularities or flaws in a material or object without destroying or affecting the usefulness of the material or object. In other words, NDT allows objects or materials to be inspected and measured without damaging them. The terms Nondestructive examination (NDE), Nondestructive inspection (NDI), and Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) are also commonly used to describe this technology.

There are four metallurgical characteristics which control all material properties. These are chemical composition, microstructure, crystal structure and dislocation density. Material properties can broadly be classified as micro structural properties and mechanical properties. Non-destructive characterization of material properties therefore assumes a great significance during fabrication as well as service life of the component.

The application of non-destructive testing methods can be summarized in the following three groups: Defectology of materials: Allows for the detection of discontinuities, assessment of corrosion and deterioration caused by environmental agents; determination of tensions; detection of leaks. Characterization of materials: Assessment of the chemical, structural, mechanical and technological features of materials; physical properties (elastic, electrical and electromagnetic); heat transference and isotherm pathways. Metrology of materials: Control of thicknesses; measurements of thicknesses on a single side, measurements of coating thicknesses; filling levels.

This course covers the basics of NDT methods for materials properties characterization, defectology and metrology.
