This course teaches some of the most important factors that influence the performance of ball and roller bearings. They should be considered when specifying bearings for a new application. The factors discussed are calculated life variations, material and heat treat, manufacturing processes, lubrication, misalignment and mounting, and preloading.

This course is for Mechanical Engineers, Automotive Engineers, Design Engineers, Civil Engineers, and any other discipline interested in rolling contact bearings, machine design, or mechanical power transmissions. It is hoped that a better understanding of performance and the factors that can have an effect on bearing performance can better be understood and considered in all new bearing application endeavors.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • The performance characteristics of rolling contact bearings
  • Factors affecting bearing life calculations
  • How material and heat treatment can affect bearing performance
  • Manufacturing processes and the effect of grain flow on performance
