Steam is one of the most efficient carriers of thermal energy, but that efficiency collapses the moment condensate is allowed to accumulate. As steam transfers its latent heat of condensation, it undergoes an instantaneous phase change into liquid water. If this liquid—along with non-condensable gases like air and carbon dioxide—is not continuously removed, it occupies space intended for live steam, crippling heat transfer, accelerating corrosion, and inducing violent water hammer.

The fundamental rule of every steam and compressed-air system is simple: Remove liquid. Retain vapor. Protect equipment

This course focuses on the primary devices tasked with enforcing that rule: Steam Traps and Moisture Separators. Effective phase separation is not a single skill, but a multidisciplinary engineering practice that integrates thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, piping design, and field diagnostics.

Bridging the gap between thermodynamic theory and real-world application, this course moves beyond academic concepts to deliver widely accepted industry practices. It traces the complete lifecycle of phase separation across commercial heating, industrial process, and compressed-air environments. Empirical sizing methods are offered utilizing differential pressure, reinforced by step-by-step, worked-out practical examples. The course will be of interest to mechanical, chemical, and petroleum engineers who are engaged in process environments.
