In Uncovering Hidden Defects: Non-Destructive Testing in Drilled Shafts (Video on Demand) , you'll learn ...
- The history and development of drilled shafts
- Typical construction challenges—ranging from alignment and concrete placement errors to more serious structural anomalies.
- The most up-to-date non-destructive testing methods that enable engineers to assess internal conditions without damaging the structure.
- Corrective actions and preventative strategies—from basic repair techniques to more advanced remediation approaches.
Overview
This course is designed to equip engineers with the critical knowledge needed to identify and address issues that may arise during drilled shaft construction. Drilled shafts are essential foundation elements in major infrastructure projects, but without proper construction practices and monitoring, defects can compromise their performance.
The course begins with an overview of the history and development of drilled shafts, followed by a detailed discussion of construction methods. Attendees will explore typical construction challenges—ranging from alignment and concrete placement errors to more serious structural anomalies. The course categorizes these defects and introduces the most up-to-date non-destructive testing methods, including crosshole sonic logging, crosshole tomography, Sonic Echo, and Thermal Integrity. These tools enable engineers to assess internal conditions without damaging the structure.
Additionally, the video covers both corrective actions and preventative strategies—from basic repair techniques to more advanced remediation approaches. Engineers will gain practical insight into effective mitigation planning that enhances reliability and ensures the long-term performance of drilled shafts.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- History and evolution of drilled shafts in construction
- Overview of construction methods for drilled shafts
- Identification of common problems during drilled shaft construction
- Categories and classifications of drilled shaft defects
- Techniques for non-destructive integrity testing, including cross hole sonic logging, cross hole tomography, perimeter sonic logging, sonic hole sonic logging, gamma-gamma logging, sonic echo, and thermal methods
- Procedures for remediation of drilled shaft defects
- Development of effective mitigation plans, including basic repair methods and grouting repair techniques
Video on Demand
This course is a recorded version of a live lecture and will be streamed directly to your computer's media player. Our format is generally compatible with media players included with all computers and mobile devices. After watching the video presentation, you will return to your account to take the online quiz. While this is a recording of a live presentation, please note that this recording will not qualify as a "live" or "interactive" continuing education activity in those jurisdictions where it is required.
Certificate of Completion
You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 10 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
