In Traffic Calming Mitigation Measures, you'll learn ...
- What is traffic calming?
- The benefits of traffic calming
- Selection of appropriate traffic calming measures
- Post-implementation methods to evaluate the effectiveness of traffic calming interventions
Overview
The course is geared towards traffic and transportation engineers looking to develop mitigation measures to control vehicle speeds through residential and commercial streets in order to increase public safety, mobility, and overall quality of life.
Understanding what traffic calming is will go along way in determining its benefits and what would be the most appropriate selection for a given roadway section. Traffic calming measures come in different forms in terms of vertical and horizontal shifts, road diverters, enforcement, and signage/pavement markings. The benefits of traffic calming include enhancing public safety, not only for pedestrians and cyclists but also for motorists. With the increase throughout the United States of multi-modal facilities, it is very important that vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists are able to comingle safely within the same street network.
The course will explore the different types of traffic calming measures and assist in determining the best option for the roadway network. Not all traffic calming measures are viable for a particular street. Available right-of-way, presence of on-street parking, and utilities are some of the features that will dictate which traffic calming is ultimately selected.
Post-evaluation of the implemented traffic calming measure is important to understand if it is performing as it was initially set out to do. Points to consider are whether vehicle speeds are being reduced, whether conflict points have been reduced, and just whether the overall perception of safety has changed in a positive direction.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- The purpose and benefits of traffic calming in enhancing safety and livability in residential and commercial areas.
- The historical development of traffic calming and its origins
- Key statistics related to speed-related crashes and their implications for traffic safety.
- Various types of traffic calming measures, including horizontal, vertical, lane narrowing, roadside, and enforcement-based strategies.
- The effectiveness of specific traffic calming devices such as chokers, chicanes, speed humps, and traffic circles.
- The impact of vehicle speed on pedestrian and bicyclist injury severity.
- The criteria used to select appropriate traffic calming measures, including cost, right-of-way, and community impact.
- The importance of public involvement and procedural steps in the implementation of traffic calming projects.
- The legal and maintenance responsibilities associated with the installation and operation of traffic calming devices.
- Post-implementation evaluation methods to determine the success and potential improvements of traffic calming interventions.
Certificate of Completion
You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 15 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
