This course explains the phenomenon of ferroresonant conditions and how it impacts the electric utility industry. Ferroresonance is a phenomenon that creates unusual operating conditions within the electric power system. This phenomenon presents an unstable condition in transformers that leads to overvoltages, overheating, and other damaging effects. This results in power interruptions and damage to utility equipment as well as customer owned equipment.

This course explains how ferroresonance occurs and presents the scenarios that may create a ferroresonant condition. Methods to prevent ferroresonance are also discussed.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • How the electrical characteristics of ferroresonance
  • The types of ferroresonant modes and their impacts
  • Situations that are favorable to ferroresonance
  • How to predict the likelihood of ferroresonance
  • The migration strategies to prevent these events
  • How to prevent these events from occurring

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 25 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
