Albert Einstein’s famous equation is simple, elegant, and is known by most people. However, only a minority of people really understand what the equation really means. These are the people who design, build, maintain, and operate the nuclear reactors that use Einstein’s equation as the basis for producing electric power.

In order to increase the population who have a working knowledge of this equation, this course provides and describes the fundamentals of atomic and nuclear physics used in current light water nuclear reactors for the generation of electricity. This course will describe and illustrate the physics involved with various nuclear processes in a working nuclear reactor without the use of complex mathematics.

At the completion of this course, the student will have a basic understanding and a working knowledge of the atom, the atom’s nucleus, atomic particles (including neutrons) and their interaction with matter, radioactivity, radioactive half-life, and the neutron’s role in causing nuclear fission reactions.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • The basic structure of the atom, including the components and nomenclature.
  • How atomic particles and neutrons interact with matter.
  • Radioactivity and radioactive half-life.
  • The concepts of mass defect and binding energy and their relationship to one another.
  • The nuclear fission process, including the types of material that can undergo fission and the production of heat from the nuclear fission process.

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 15 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
