This course covers Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS) devices, which can be employed to improve stability and increase the load-carrying capacity of a high-voltage electric system.

There are many types of FACTS devices, and several devices are discussed in this series. This course is volume II of a two-volume series.

The first volume is this series provided a basic description of power flow and voltage supply concepts and outlined the types of FACTS devices.

Volume II, which builds on the basics of Volume I, describes the following FACTS devices:

Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM), Distribution STATCOM, Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC), Series Static Synchronous Compensator (SSSC), and Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC).

The devices in Volume II focus on voltage source converter (VSC) technology.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • How a STATCOM works
  • How DSTATCOMs are used
  • The application of SSSC’s
  • The operating characteristics of an SSSC
  • The applications for TCSC devices
  • The benefits of UPFCs
  • The cost differences among the FACTS devices

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 30 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
