This course is tailored for civil or mechanical engineers who desire a step-by-step level understanding of how to design and layout pumping stations for municipal water and wastewater systems. No prior knowledge of pumping station design is required; however, basic fluid dynamics will be used within the course.

The course introduces you to the hydraulic design of pumping systems, including pipe sizing, system head curves, pump performance curves, and pump and motor selection. You will learn how to choose and size wet well intake structures and how to properly layout piping, valves, and equipment. An overview of the different types of commonly used pipe materials, valves, and pumps is provided, along with recommended applications and advantages/disadvantages for each. Finally, you will learn the procedure for factory and field testing pumping systems and the recommended acceptance criteria to be used.

Industry standards and best practices are used throughout the course, including those from the American Water Works Association (AWWA), U.S. Army Corp of Engineers (USACE), and the Hydraulic Institute (HI). Numerous examples and illustrations are provided to aid in your understanding of the course material.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Design development for municipal water and wastewater pumping systems
  • Pumping system suction and discharge piping sizing and arrangement
  • Pumping system hydraulics, including continuity and Bernoulli equations
  • Pump static and dynamic head, friction losses, and minor losses
  • System head curves and manufacturer pump performance curves
  • Identify system operating points using pump and system curves
  • Pump selection criteria and reliable pump operating ranges
  • Pump minimum submergence and net positive suction head
  • Pump motor and drive selection, motor speed, and motor horsepower
  • Pump and pipeline material selection for different pumping systems
  • Overview of different rotodynamic and positive displacement pumps
  • Required wet well operating volume and pump cycle time
  • Overview and sizing criteria for different wet well intake structures
  • Pump station layout, including pump, piping, and valve arrangement
  • Factory and field performance testing and acceptance grade criteria

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 25 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
