Overview
This course is specifically designed for Ohio-licensed engineers to qualify as a "timed and monitored" online course. The course contains an automatic timer that prevents the user from accessing the quiz and earning a certificate of completion until the minimum amount of study time has been met. This achieves the Ohio Board's intent that an online course should be "paced" by the provider. For more information, please see the Ohio state requirements. This course may also be accepted in other states (see the "Board Acceptance" tab above). However, if you are not licensed in Ohio, it is suggested that you purchase the self-paced version of the course.

In Electric Vehicles, you'll learn ...

  • Electric vehicle design and performance characteristics
  • The battery pack, DC/DC converters, AC/DC inverters, battery management system, and battery monitoring system used in electric vehicles
  • The infrastructure required for charging electric vehicles
  • Fuel economy and emissions of electric vehicles compared to conventional gasoline engines

The use of electric vehicles is growing worldwide, and the performance characteristics and supporting infrastructure are expediting the acceptance of electric vehicles in the market. This acceptance will bring with it a host of changes, such as the prevalence of charging stations and the inclusion of relevant battery technologies. There are also specific environmental and performative aspects to consider, and having an awareness of these elements will be useful as the automotive landscape adjusts to the growing use of electric vehicles.

This course describes how electric vehicles work and the types of electric vehicles in use. Relevant battery technology is explained, and charging methods and technologies are discussed. The course provides performance data on a range of EVs currently in commercial production.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • The difference between AEV, HEV, PHEV, and BAHV vehicles
  • The components used in vehicle type
  • The efficiency, range, and acceleration of different evs
  • Comparison of the different battery types
  • The charging levels used in the US and the benefits of each
  • The types of public charging systems available
  • How to evaluate the cost/benefit of an EV for a specific situation

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 25 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
