Overview
Plate girders are built-up steel members that are fabricated from steel plate elements and connected by welding or bolts.
Plate girders with I-shape are commonly used in the steel construction industry; the typical plate girder consists of a slender web to resist the required shear strength and compact or non-compact flanges to resist the required flexure strength.
Plate girders have many advantages when compared to hot rolled beams, such as:
Plate girders give less weight per area than hot-rolled beams, but the fabrication cost is higher than the hot-rolled ones.
Plate girders may have different shapes, such as straight plate girders, tapered plate girders, and tapered-straight-tapered plate girders.
Plate girders are used in structures with longer spans, crane girders, mezzanines carrying heavy concrete loads or machinery loads, and railway or traffic bridges.
Solved comprehensive examples are introduced to apply all of the concepts and knowledge of the course to plate girders.
This course involves a deep study on the design of plate girders; according to AISC Construction Manual 15th edition-Parts 3, AISC360-16-Chapter F, and AISC360-16-Chapter G, all course equations are presented using ASD and LRFD methods.
