Overview
This two hour online course introduces the reader to the essentials for the design, construction, and maintenance of rain gardens. This course is intended for homeowners, practicing engineers, contractors, developers, regulators, and all other personnel involved with the design, installation, and maintenance of rain gardens.
Urbanization inevitably causes some degree of disturbance and compaction of the soil, the loss of vegetation density, impacts to natural habitats and the creation of impervious surfaces. Methods are frequently sought to mitigate the effects of urbanization in new and existing development. Rain gardens provide the opportunity to improve water quality, habitat, infiltration, and aesthetics on a site.
Most simply, a rain garden is a strategically placed puddle. Rain gardens are one of the most versatile integrated management practices in the Low Impact Development (LID) toolbox. Rain gardens, if designed installed and maintained properly, can help to mitigate the impacts of urbanization in a cost-effective aesthetic manner. Rain gardens frequently incorporate engineered soils, along with carefully selected plant materials to assist in the cleansing of runoff. Knowing the key design, construction, and maintenance considerations is essential for the successful implementation of this valuable best management practice.
