Overview
This course presents thermodynamics concepts with an emphasis on renewable energy. It is for non-chemical and non-mechanical engineers who have no prior background studying thermodynamics, as well as a refresher course for those who may want to relearn thermodynamics.
Thermodynamics occurs around us all the time. Thermodynamics covers how work and heat are applied in a myriad of ways. Whether how your home’s air conditioning system keeps your home cool during the summer or how your automobile’s engine powers your car, thermodynamic concepts are integral to enabling society’s quality of life.
This course includes renewable energy applications that generate heat, such as:
- Concentrated Solar
- Geothermal
- Biomass Combustion
- Biodigester Production Of Methane (Or Biogas)
Key renewable energy concepts, such as biomass heating value and solar irradiance, will be covered. The economics of renewable energy will be explored, such as the calculation of the cost to generate electrical power and the payback period for investing in a renewable energy project.
Thermodynamic theories, laws, charts, equations, tables, diagrams, and other information will be presented and be explained for real-world residential and commercial examples, such as a solar water heater, a residential air condition system, a swamp cooler, a geothermal power generation, and a Stirling Engine powered by biomass and concentrated solar energy.
After completing this course, you will know the principles and concepts of thermodynamics. The course will provide a straightforward and practical examination of thermodynamics with common rules, underlying principles, and calculations.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Application of the ideal gas equation and buoyancy equation to determine the maximum payload of an airshipe
- Estimating the warm water production rate for a solar hot water heater and calculating the size of the solar heater’s tubinge
- Calculating the size of a concentrated solar power reflector based on it powering a Stirling Engine electric generator assemblye
- Estimating the cost and amount of wood biomass used as fuel for an electrical power applicatione
- Calculation of the amount of power produced from a geothermal source based on steam principlese
- Estimating the required size of an air condition system based on temperature and humidity ratio requirementse
- Performing preliminary design calculations of a biodigester that converts manure to methane
Certificate of Completion
You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 30 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
