This course is the third in a series about conductors used in the electric utility industry. This course deals with medium voltage underground cables, which include voltages between 5 kV and 35 kV. Each component of a medium voltage cable is described in detail, including the conductor, insulation, metallic shields, and jackets. The course describes how to calculate relevant data such as inductance, capacitance, ampacity, and short circuit capability. Installation and design calculations are including for pulling cable in conduit.

This course is one of four courses on electrical power conductors. The four courses are:

  • Electric Power Conductors Volume I: Electrical Characteristics
  • Electric Power Conductors Volume II: Mechanical Characteristics
  • Electric Power Conductors Volume III: Medium Voltage Cables
  • Electric Power Conductors Volume IV: Low Voltage Cables

Each course is written as a stand-alone course and it is not necessary to take them in order. Because they are written as stand-alone courses there is some duplication of material among the four courses.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • The components of medium voltage cables
  • The types of insulation used in cables
  • The characteristics of the material used in cables
  • The different cable stranding configurations
  • The concept of “treeing”
  • Types of metal shields used in medium voltage cables
  • How to calculate inductive and capacitive reactance
  • How to calculate conduit pulling tensions

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 30 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
