In Electric Power Conductors Volume II: Mechanical Characteristics, you'll learn ...
- The sizing, strength, tension, and other mechanical characteristics of overhead conductors used in the electric utility industry
- How to calculate sag and tension
- Methods to reduce the harmful impacts of wind-induced conductor motions
Overview
This course explains the mechanical characteristics of overhead conductors used in the electric utility industry. The course covers NESC requirements and explains the sizing, strength, tension, and other mechanical characteristics of overhead conductors. Sag and tension calculations are presented, as well as methods of checking for sag conditions in the field. Methods to reduce the harmful impacts of wind-induced conductor motions are also discussed. This course is one of several in a series dealing with electrical conductors.
This course is one of four courses on electrical power conductors. The four courses are:
- Electric Power Conductors Volume I: Electrical Characteristics
- Electric Power Conductors Volume II: Mechanical Characteristics
- Electric Power Conductors Volume III: Medium Voltage Cables
- Electric Power Conductors Volume IV: Low Voltage Cables
Each course is written as a stand-alone course and it is not necessary to take them in order. Because they are written as stand-alone courses there is some duplication of material among the four courses.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- NESC requirements concerning conductor loading
- How to calculate wind and ice loading on a conductor
- The different overhead conductor designs
- The benefits of ACSR conductor
- How to calculate conductor breaking strength
- How sag and tension tables are constructed
- How to calculate conductor tensions
- How to mitigate wind-induced vibrations and galloping
Certificate of Completion
You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 25 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
