In Lightning Causes, Effects, and Protection, you'll learn ...
- What causes lightning and thunder
- Damages caused by lightning
- Lightning protection methods
Overview
As engineers, we like to know more about the natural world and natural phenomena. To that end we regularly observe and study the natural world and its laws. We all know something about natural laws that work for us, no matter how we may try to deny them. We all know that you can’t negotiate with gravity or thermodynamics. Lightning and thunder occur because the world obeys the natural laws of physics. Before Benjamin Franklin observed the electrical effects of lightning little was known of this phenomenon. At that time it was known that lightning was spectacular, and thunder was noisy. It was also known that lighting could injure or kill people and animals and damage or destroy things.
This course uses natural laws to explain some of the causes and effects of lightning and thunder. You’ll learn how lightning forms, as well as the three different types of lightning You’ll about sound pressure level measurement and where thunder falls on the sound pressure spectrum. Finally, you’ll learn about the kind of damages caused by lightning, as well as various methods to protect people and property from lightning strikes.
