- The basic components of an electric capacitor and how capacitors are rated
- How capacitors affect substations and transmission lines
- Where to locate capacitors in a power system
- How capacitors are used to help start large motors
Overview
This 4-hour course covers the application of capacitors on electric power systems. The course explains how capacitors are constructed and how they may be used to improve power factors and improve voltage profiles in electric distribution systems.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- The function of electrical capacitors
- How capacitors are constructed
- What is meant by "leading" and "lagging" power factors
- How to properly size a capacitor bank
- How capacitors may improve a voltage profile
- The various methods of switching capacitors
- How to apply capacitors to electric motors
Certificate of Completion
You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 25 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
