This course is for Civil Engineers, Sanitary Engineers or any Engineers who might deal with open-channel flow. No prior knowledge of open channel flow is needed; however basic algebra and trigonometry will be used in the course. The course introduces you to hydraulic elements of open-channels. An introduction to types of flow and fundamental equations used for open-channels is also covered. You will learn how to find the critical depth, normal depth, sequent depth, Froude number and Reynolds number for open channel flow. Finally, you will learn how to compute a water surface profile for gradually varied flow and how to use weirs to measure discharge or flow.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Hydraulic elements of open-channels
  • Types of flow in open-channels
  • Fundamental equations used for open-channels
  • How to find critical depth and normal depth
  • How to find sequent depth for a hydraulic jump
  • How to compute the Froude number and the Reynolds number
  • How to compute the surface profile for gradually varied flow (GVF)
  • Use of Structures like weirs to measure discharge or flow

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 20 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
