- Key features in the development of the plot plan, including Terrain, Throughput, Safety and Environment
- Equipment layout principles, including the provision of clearance and accessibility for crane, forklift, tube bundle pulling, etc.
- Basic principles of piping layout, including safety, grouping, interferences, supports, pipe ways and rack piping
- System specific piping layout guidelines for fire protection, compressed air, steam distribution, and fuel oil systems
- The purpose and goals of the 30%, 60% and 90% 3-D Model Review
Overview
Piping design involves a lot of visualization and creativity. The design, engineering and construction of process plants involve multidisciplinary team effort. A good designer knows not only how their designs are affected by other disciplines, but also how theirs affect the other disciplines. Piping design takes into consideration a vast amount of variables, for example: the type of product being piped, pipe specification, flexibility, constructability, future connections, and maintenance requirements to name a few. The objective is to design safe and dependable processing facilities in a cost effective manner.
This 6-hour course will cover the fundamental of plant layout, the equipment used, the piping design principles and procedures.
This course is Part 6 of a 9-part series that covers the entire gamut of piping engineering in an easy-to-learn format. Each course in the series is stand-alone. Feel free to jump back and forth through the courses depending on your own knowledge and experience and your current needs. However, it is suggested that you complete the series in sequential order if you have limited knowledge of piping systems.
This course is intended for mechanical engineers, chemical engineers, piping engineers, control systems engineers, as well as civil, structural and electrical engineers who have a need or a desire to know more about piping components and systems. No prerequisite knowledge of the subject is required.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Plant layout fundamentals and procedures
- How to demarcate the site area for process equipment, utilities and service buildings
- The various equipment used in process plants
- The engineering guidelines for access and clearances for various equipment, utilities, piperacks, tanks and service buildings
- When, where and how to run piperacks, sleepers and underground piping
- OSHA guidelines for Stairs, Ladders and Platforms
- Various types of drawings, orthographic (Plan & Elevation) drawings and Isometric Drawings
- 3D modeling of plants and piping systems
- Basic design considerations for offsite & yard piping and underground piping
