In Mechanical Power Transmission Fundamentals, you'll learn ...
- Types and characteristics of gear trains and gearboxes, including multi-speed gearboxes used for automobile transmissions
- Coupling types, including rigid, spacer and fluid couplings
- When to use a three jaw clutch vs. a spiral jaw clutch vs. a friction clutch
- Various types of belts, pulleys, chains and sprockets and their relative merits
Overview
Mechanical Power Transmission (MPT) is a very dynamic field of endeavor, with applications ranging from the chain on a bicycle, the gearbox on a wind turbine, or the drive train of an automobile. The chain on a bicycle transfers human energy into kinetic energy; the gearbox on a wind turbine transfers wind energy into electrical energy; and, the drive train of an automobile transfers chemical energy (gasoline powered vehicles) also into kinetic energy.
The field is not without its challenges. MPT systems can be very complex and hard to understand. This course removes some of the complexity by breaking down MPT into its various elements and dealing with them separately. This course is suitable for anyone who wants to increase their knowledge and understanding of Mechanical Power Transmission.
This course is complete with relevant text, self-explanatory sketches, and simple mathematical relationships. The course begins by covering gear trains, planetary gear sets, differential gears, and gearboxes and their use in the industrial and automotive fields. Next, couplings and clutches are discussed with reference to their use in automotive torque converters. Finally, a short description of belts and chains is given including when they should be used in lieu of gears.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Gain a complete understanding of gear trains and gearboxes
- Understand the operation and function of differential gears
- Understand the power paths through synchromesh transmissions
- Understand the operation and function of torque converters
- Know when to use belts and pulleys in lieu of gears
Certificate of Completion
You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 20 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
