In Material Handling: Applying NFPA 79 and Other Standards to Machinery Emergency Stops, you'll learn ...
- Industry standards and regulations for machinery emergency stops
- OSHA requirements for E-stops
- The three categories of stop functions defined in NFPA 79
- The implications of making a drive system NFPA 79 compliant
Overview
This course covers the requirements for machinery emergency stops, primarily in the packaging and product handling industries. The course identifies applicable standards which may be applied to the design of E-stops, with particular emphasis on the requirements of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 79, Electrical Standard for Industrial Machines (Copyright© 2011).
The purpose of this course is not to assess the risk or the safety of E-stop designs for machinery, but rather how to determine applicable approaches to ensure compliance with applicable standards.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Applicable standards used in machine design for equipment manufactured in the United States.
- Where to find standards and regulatory requirements for emergency stop circuits.
- Standards used in the European market for machine design
- Which standards are law and which are recommended practices
- Critical functions of a stop and an emergency stop
- Applicable standards for conveyors
- Emergency stop circuits for VFD's
- Operational benefits and risks associated with emergency stop circuits on a VFD
