Overview
The normal function of traffic lights requires sophisticated control and coordination to ensure that traffic moves as smoothly and safely as possible and that pedestrians are protected when they cross the roads. This Traffic Signal Design course describes principals used in the design of traffic signals. A step-by-step procedure is presented for preparing a set of traffic signal design plans.
Included in the course is a discussion of traffic signal support selection, signal head placement, vehicle detection design, pedestrian system design, and the selection of signal phasing and timings.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Present the three basic types of signal control
- Explain traffic signal plans preparation issues using a sample intersection
- Discuss the various types of intersections where signal control is used
- Show how signal heads are located using a sample intersection
- Discuss signal head sight distance requirements
- Describe the layout of the vehicle detection system
- Describe the design of the pedestrian system at a signalized intersection
- Discuss design issues relative to the provision of electric power
- Discuss required timing intervals and how they are determined
- Describe design features used to accommodate individuals with special needs
Certificate of Completion
You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 25 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
