Offshore Wind Energy Generation

This one-hour webinar provides a comprehensive overview of the technologies, challenges, and potential of offshore wind as a renewable energy source. Worldwide, there is a significant amount of offshore wind energy production. However, wind energy production in the United States lags Europe and Asia.

The webinar begins by highlighting the current U.S. energy generation mix and the significant capacity and consistency advantages offshore wind has over onshore wind and solar power. Despite a higher cost and technical complexity, offshore wind offers over 2,000 GW of technical potential in the U.S., enough to meet twice the nation’s energy demand.

The webinar explores the structural engineering of wind turbines, including blade aerodynamics, tip-speed ratios, and turbine orientation. It explains foundation types – such as gravity, monopile, suction caisson, and floating platforms like spar buoys and semi-submersibles – suitable for various sea depths and soil conditions. Environmental, logistical, and political challenges are discussed, including navigation, military use, ecological impacts, regulatory hurdles, and the Jones Act.

Economic factors like capital and operating costs and the levelized cost of energy are reviewed, alongside environmental considerations affecting marine and bird life. The presentation concludes with planning standards, legal frameworks like UNCLOS, and offshore wind lease areas in the U.S., emphasizing the promise of offshore wind despite high costs and regulatory complexities.

What you’ll learn in just one hour:

  • The benefits of offshore wind energy

  • How wind resources are categorized

  • The components of a wind turbine generator

  • Types of foundations used for offshore wind energy

  • The cost structure of offshore wind energy

  • The environmental impacts of installing offshore wind turbines
